The three slow little hoiho




Once upon a time there lived three solw little hoiho. One day their mother thought that they were old enough to live by themselves, so she kicked them out and told them to find their own home. The first little Hoiho built his whare out of rimu trees. The second little hoiho built his whare out of kauri trees. And the third little hoiho built his whare from mighty rimu trees.




One day a seal came and saw their houses. It made a huge shadow on their whare. IT WAS A DEADLY SHADOw. Quickly, each little hoiho scuttled to their whare. The seal walked to the first whare. ‘‘Little hoiho, let me in, let me in! Or I’ll knock over and kick and I’ll collapse your whare in’’.

‘‘Mahi atu’’ the first hoiho quipped back.

So the seal knocked over and kicked and collapsed the whare in. The first little hoiho scuttled to the second hoiho’s whare.




The seal walked over to the second whare made of kauri trees. ‘‘Little hoiho, let me in, let me in! Or I’ll knock over and kick and I’ll collapse your whare in’’.

‘‘Mahi atu’’ the second hoiho shot back. So the seal knocked over and kicked and collapsed the whare in. The first and second little hoiho scampered to the third hoiho’s whare.
